Dear Parent or Carer,
The Director of Public Health at City of Wolverhampton has written to all schools to provide the following information to provide reassurance and practical guidance following recent national reports of meningitis cases in Kent.
There is no current concern specific to Wolverhampton, but this is a timely moment to ensure that our usual awareness and prevention measures remain strong.
This communication summarises key symptoms to look out for, what action to take if you have concerns about a pupil or student, and vaccination information.
Reassurance
There is no local outbreak and no change to routine risk levels.
The situation in Kent is being managed through standard public health processes.
Locally, no additional measures are required beyond usual hygiene and awareness.
Key symptoms of meningitis
Meningitis and septicaemia can develop quickly. Symptoms may include:
Fever
Severe headache
Rapid breathing
Vomiting
Drowsiness or confusion
Cold hands and feet
Stiff neck
Sensitivity to light
Rash that does not fade under pressure (not always present)
What to do if you suspect a case
Seek urgent medical advice (NHS 111, GP, or 999 in an emergency).
Do not wait for a rash to appear.
Inform the school so we can notify the UKHSA Health Protection Team
Vaccination Information
MenB vaccination is part of the infant programme only, as babies are at highest risk.
Parents of children under 2 are encouraged to ensure they are up to date.
Older students should be encouraged to take up MenACWY vaccination if eligible.
