Numeracy

Numeracy Across the Curriculum

  • At St Matthias we have numeracy and mathematics activities and skills embedded throughout our curriculum.

The Four Mathematical Habits

Four intrinsic habits of all mathematicians:

  • Determination

  • Reasoning

  • Communication

  • Curiosity

At St Matthias we embed these habits within every subject in our curriculum to aid all students to become better mathematicians.

Determination

  • 'A St Matthias student is resilient and never gives up.'

  • Determination is key to becoming a successful learner.

  • Solving problems has become a significant part of the new GCSE (up to 30%).

Do not worry about your difficulties in Mathematics. I can assure you mine are still greater' - Albert Einstein.

Reasoning

Up to 30% of the new Mathematics GCSE curriculum requires students to 'reason, communicate and compare Mathematically' in which students must:

  • make deductions, inferences and draw conclusions from mathematical information

  • construct chains of reasoning to achieve a given result

  • interpret and communicate information accurately

  • present arguments and proofs

  • assess the validity of an argument and critically evaluate a given way of presenting information

Thinking in a logical way, the ability to create arguments and evaluate information is a skill required by all subjects in our curriculum.

Communication

  • Education is a process of communication.

  • Communicating responses in a clear, methodical way is essential to gaining good results in Mathematics as well as many other subjects.

  • We develop the skill of communication in a variety of ways:

  • Questioning focus for the Spring term e.g. think, pair share activities e.t.c.

  • Insisting on full sentence responses

Curiosity

  • 'Curiosity is critical to academic performance' (Association for Psychological Science).

  • Curiosity con make learning not only more fun, but more effective.

  • Mathematicians are by nature curious and curiosity hos lead to the discovery of the mathematical knowledge that we hove today.

  • We foster curiosity throughout our curriculum to enhance the learning experience for all our students.
