Students at St Matthias had the opportunity to attend a Careers Expo this week. This was a fantastic opportunity to bring in a wide range of providers from FE, HE, Apprenticeships and Training and the Uniformed Services for our students to meet and learn from.
Each provider set up a stall so that students were able to informally approach lots of different trainers/employers and talk to them personally. This was a great way for students to experience a wide range of opportunities in their local community and for educators and businesses to begin to build their talent pipeline.
Past students were amongst the exhibitors at this year’s careers fair in school: Keira Macdonald, a year 11 leaver who now attends Wolverhampton Military Preparation College, Ryan Williams, who now works for Wolves Training Academy, and Carole Freeman, a Healthcare Science Practitioner for Manchester NHS Trust all came to tell students about their different career paths after their Deansfield High School / St Matthias School start.
Providers in attendance:
Halesowen College
RAF
Inn-Comm
Apprenticeships Works
Walsall College
Wolverhampton College
Sandwell College
Central St Michaels Sixth Form
Juniper Training
NOVA Training
Birmingham Institute of Music
British Film and Screen School
King Edwards VI Form College
What was the impact of our Careers Expo?
It was an excellent way for students to hear what local providers have on offer. Students in all year groups were able talk to different educators/employers and gain an understanding of what their courses/jobs entail or the different roles available, and the skills that are needed to be successful in today’s economy. The fact that it was an informal setting meant that students could ask any questions they had. Many students left with prospectuses, business cards, leaflets and free samples.
Feedback from students:
“I have spoken to sixth forms. This is because I want to be a psychiatrist when I’m older. This was useful because I can study psychology at sixth form.” Rayne
“I spoke to Codsall football academy and Wolves football academy. I have learnt that you get education and sport. I am interested in this.” Benny
“There are a lot of opportunities that you can get. Lots of different careers. My favourite provider is inn-comm training services that helps you with apprenticeships.” Victory
